About Us

Senator Nathaniel Exum is the Senator for the 24th Legislative District in Prince George's County in the Maryland General Assembly. He has served the 24th Legislative District for thirty-five (35) years, first as a Delegate and as a Senator for the last twelve years (12). 
 
His top three priorities for Maryland are:

  • Consistent funding for Public Education
  • Elimination of Health Disparities
  • Economic Development for Small & Minority Businesses

 In the Senate, he has held several positions:

  • Member, Senate Finance Committee
  • Chair, Special Committee on Substance Abuse
  • Senate Chair, Joint Committee on Welfare Reform
  • Senate Chair, Workers' Compensation Benefits and Insurance Oversight Committee
  • Member, Joint Committee on Children, Youth, and Families
  • Member, Joint Committee on Federal Relations
  • Member, Maryland Legislative Black Caucus
  • Member, National Conference of State Legislators
  • Member, National Black Caucus of State Legislators

Senator Exum is a leader in the state government as well as in the community. Over the years he has held several leadership positions including:

  • Trustee, Metropolitan A.M.E. Church
  • Board of Directors, Palmer Park/Landover Boys &Girls Club
  • Founder, Students' Legislative Day in the Maryland General Assembly (1997)
  • Life Member, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
  • Member/Supporter, United Methodist Men's Male Youth Enrichment Ministry
  • Member, Peppermill Village Citizens Association
  • Member, Arlene Drive Block Club
  • Member, Prince Hall Masonic Lodge No. 92

Over the course of his service to Maryland, five (5) of his most significant achievements are:

  • Twenty years of continuous support for the Ebenezer United Methodist Men's Male Youth Enrichment (Mentoring) Program
  • Senate Bill 177 (2004-Ch. 443) Maryland Office & Minority Health and Health Disparities
  • Senate Bill 144 (2003) The Foundation School
  • Fifty (50) Million Dollars set aside to prevent the closing of the Prince George's General Hospital (2008)
  • Senate Bill 874 (2009 - Ch. 620) Mental Health Adminsitration - Rights of Individuals with Mental Disorders in Facilities
